What is resilience?
Put in lay-man terms, resilience is your ability to withstand or bounce back from a difficult event in your life. Whether it’s a bereavement, divorce, or failing at something, it’s ultimately your ability to recover from such events.
Can i learn to be resilient?
Ofcourse you can, just think back to when you had a moment in your life where you felt completely down. Maybe you lost a loved one, or perhaps you broke up with a partner and felt your world had ended. At that specific moment what were your feelings? I can share mine, i remember losing my parent and felt I had nobody left in life and I’m never going to live a normal life. So what did you do to overcome those feelings? Just give yourself a moment to think about it. Now write down on a paper or your phone what actions you took. It maybe you needed therapy like CBT, or went to see your GP. Did you ever ask yourself what your purpose was at the time? For instance, if you lost a loved one, did you ever think what they wanted you to do for them? Or maybe you decided you will look after yourself more to prove your ex made a mistake when breaking up. This is called finding a purpose to keep going. Once you’ve found your purpose, you’ll find you can power through any invasive thought that will fester off your emotions. Once you keep going in your mind, any anxious thought will be negated by your new purpose.
What has this got to do with anxiety?
You’ll find people who are anxious tend you have lots of thoughts (predominately negative) go through their mind. Thoughts which tell them they can’t do this, they’re not good at that. Why are they even going to try when they will fail? These are just some of the thoughts that bring about anxiety in people. However, if you instill a purpose within a coping mechanisms, you’ll find the coping mechanism is far more effective and will work. Resilience if used correctly can be a powerful tool to help people overcome anxiety when exposed to similar situations in life. And remember you are in charge of those thoughts and feelings.
P.S. We may do a live event workshop explaining what is resilience is and how we can use it. So keep a look out on our events page.
